Newroz

In March, Diyarbakır gathers for Newroz — an annual threshold between winter and spring, marked by fire, music, and renewal. Across the city, people arrive in groups and families, dressed in bright colors, carrying food and tea, finding each other in the crowd. Fires rise and fall in the wind; the beat of drums and the pull of govend draw long lines of dancers into a shared rhythm.
Newroz carries layers of seasonal ritual, folklore, and history. On the ground, what stands out first is a feeling: the act of gathering, the careful work of memory, the ordinary tenderness of people making a day for themselves. It is both a celebration of spring and a moment when culture comes together to reaffirm their heritage in a collective expression of hope.
