Beyond Colors

In the historic tanneries of Fez, leather is still worked by hand in round stone vats. Hides are cleaned and softened in mixtures of water, quicklime and ammonia-rich solutions traditionally made with pigeon droppings, then dyed with pigments such as indigo, henna and poppy. The craft has anchored the medina’s economy for centuries and its cadence is visible in every gesture. The images follow the labour where skill meets heat, weight and repetition, tracing the persistence that keeps the craft alive.
